●  Born - 20, November, 1929 at Govindpura, Punjab, British India. ( at present in Pakistan)

●  Wife - Nirmal Saini.

●   He was the  one of 15 Siblings, 8 of whom died before Partition of India.

●  He was orphaned during the partition of India-Pakistan. ( He witnessed the killing of his parents)

●  He moved to Delhi after entering India, where he lived with his married sister for short period of time.

●  He was once imprisoned at tihar jail for Travelling on train with out Ticket.

●  1951, After giving his 4th attempt,  He successfully gained Entrance in Indian Army.


●  He used to run 10 km daily to and from school as a child,  hence,  He was selected for Special Training in Athletics by Army.




●  1958, Singh set records for the 200m and 400m in the National Game of India, held at Cuttack and Won the Gold medals.

●  1958, He won the Gold medal in 400m in British Empire and Commonwealth Games with a time of 46.6 seconds.

●  He was tha first Gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games from Independent India.

●  1958, He won Gold medal in 200 m and 400 m in Asian Games held at Tokyo. After this He promoted to the JCO from sepoy.

●in 1959,  He got 4th Highest Civilian Award of India , Padma Shri. 

●  1960, Milkha Singh Defeated Abdul Khaliq ( Pakistani Athlete) and Got Nick Name 'Flying Sikh'.

●  1964, He lost 400 m in National Games of India at Calcutta against Makhan Singh.

●  2013 - ' The Race of My Life ' Auto Biography of Milkha Singh.


●  2014 - His words while sharing his experience at Goa"The awards nowadays are distributed like 'prasad' in a temple. Why should one be honoured when he or she has not achieved the benchmark for the award? I rejected the Arjuna I was offered after I received the Padma Shri. It was like being offered an SSC [secondary school] certificate after securing a Masters degree."


●  Singh was admitted to the intensive care unit at Fortis Hospital in Mohali on 24 May 2021 with pneumonia caused by COVID-19.

●  Death - 18, June,  2021 at Chandigarh.
